A Rio Rancho mother tried to protect her toddler from two vicious dogs Saturday afternoon, but she and two of her children were all injured. Police tried to stop the dogs and when they couldn't, they shot them.
Michelle Petty says she almost never sees cop cars or commotion on her block. So, this afternoon was out of the ordinary
"I'm shocked because it's very quiet," said witness Meredith Beaton. "I was coming up the street and I saw police cars. I didn't see one car, it must have been 12."
Police say they responded to a 911 call and saw a dog attacking a woman. They tried to get the dogs off and when they couldn't, officers shot them.
They say the woman was shielding a 2-year-old from the dogs, but police say that toddler was still badly injured. An 8-year-old was also had a minor injury.
"I hope they're okay and I just think it's a freak accident. I don't know what happened, what would possess the dogs to attack them. I haven't seen anything vicious around here," said Petty.
Police haven't said if the mother and her children knew the dogs.
People told KOB, they are hoping the people hurt are doing alright.
"I wish them well and I wish them a safe recovery, speedy recovery," said Beaton.
The breed and condition of the dogs is unknown at this time.
