NAVAJO DAM, NM -- A 6-year-old Colorado boy drowned in Navajo Lake while camping with his family for his birthday, the San Juan County Sheriff's Office confirmed Monday.

On Saturday, deputies responded to Cocaine Cove in reference to a drowning. The family told deputies their child, 6-year-old Christian Korte of Durango, Colorado, had been playing with his older brother away from the water when they got separated. The family searched for the boy and soon found him floating in the lake.

They performed CPR until park rangers arrived to continue lifesaving efforts, but they were eventually deemed hopeless.

"This is heartbreaking," Sheriff Ken Christensen said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Christian's family."
