The former Jemez Springs police chief pleaded not guilty to rape charges Monday.

State police arrested Shane Harger on Aug. 7 after a grand jury indictment accused him of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman during a traffic stop. Then, according to state police, he threatened to throw her into jail, but eventually let her go.

Harger pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact, extortion and kidnapping. He is being held on $250,000 cash or surety bond.

The next hearing is scheduled for December 18, 2014.

"Mr. Harger is innocent of these charges and that will become abundantly clear as this case moves forward," a lawyer representing Harger wrote in a statement.
