The family of Marc Herrera said they are relieved after a judge ruled his wife, Amy Herrera, will stand trial for his murder.
"I think you can probably tell by the smile on my face that we're ecstatic," said Marc's mother, Marian Herrera.
A judge ruled Wednesday that prosecutors have enough evidence to bring Amy Herrera to trial on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. The judge ruled prosecutors did not present enough evidence for a first-degree murder charge.
An attorney for Herrera entered a not guilty plea.
Air Force Major Marc Herrera was found dead in the couple's closet in July 2012. Investigators say he was shot during a party the couple was hosting for foreign exchange students who lived with them. At first, Amy Herrera claimed her husband committed suicide. Her attorney now argues that she killed her husband in self-defense.
"When you tell the truth, you have one story to tell and it never changes," said Marian Herrera. "And you tell it over, and over, and over again. She's told too many stories, too many times, to too many people. I don't think she's capable of telling the truth."
Amy Herrera has avoided trial twice in the past because the indictments were dismissed.
