More than 1,000 tires burnt on the Pajarito Mesa Thursday morning, according to the Bernalillo County Fire Department.
Bernalillo County Fire Marshall Chris Gilbert told KOB at 4 p.m. that the fire was extinguished, and crews had left the area. He said the investigation continues into the cause, but no damages had been reported.
Dispatchers say the fire was first reported after 7 a.m. south of the Route 66 Casino. It's not clear whether anyone owns the tires or if they were dumped in the location.
BCFD sent two engines, two brush fire trucks and two water trucks to the scene. Department spokesman Chris Gober says their biggest challenge with the fire is the lack of water in the area.
The department requested assistance from the Albuquerque Fire Department.
A black plume of smoke from the blaze could be seen from I-40 around the metro.
There's no word yet on the cause of the fire.
