The Albuquerque-based inventor who came up with Liquid Off, a water-based product you can spray on clothes and fabric to repel stains, is getting a huge boost.

The product, which raised $270,000 through a Kickstarter campaign, will be in some of the gift bags celebrities receive at the Emmy Awards.

A new boost in demand means production of the product is in high gear.

The plant in northwest Albuquerque Harold Stewart uses is churning out bottles of Liquid Off, the product Stewart quit his government job to take a chance on.

"I moved across the country and cashed in my 401k," Stewart said.

But the risk is paying off. Backers shelled out almost $300,000 thanks to Stewart's product demonstrations – like the suede shoe treated with Liquid Off that repels maple syrup like there's a force field surrounding it.

Kevin Mallory owns the plant, and says the potential for job creation at the plant is "significant."

"It's cool," Stewart said. "Two months in, and we're going to be at the Emmys."

A bottle of Liquid Off and a pre-treated t-shirt will be passed out in gift bags at the Emmys this year, and Stewart will be there promoting the product.

"It gives us the opportunity to actually interact with celebrities, which is pretty awesome," Stewart said.

Sandia Labs has also offered to license formulas to Stewart to make the product even more effective.

"Every day I think, 'this is a reality, you know?'" Stewart said. "It just shows how much hard work really pays off."

Stewart says he plans to have a model wearing a little black dress at the Emmy gift bag party, which will be treated in Liquid Off. Anyone will be able to throw liquids at it and watch the product in action.
