LAS CRUCES -- A small airplane headed from Las Cruces Airport to Phoenix crashed Wednesday evening, killing all four passengers on board.
Lt. Emmanuel Gutierrez of the New Mexico State Police said the crash occurred not long after the plane took off around 7 p.m. When officers arrived, the plane was fully engulfed in flames about a mile south of I-10.
Witness reports say the twin-engine, fixed wing airplane had been flying at a low altitude prior to the crash.
The plane was contracted by Elite Medical Transport and had a patient and three crew members on board.
State police identified the four people killed in the crash as 29-year-old Freddy Martinez, the pilot; 27-year-old Tauren Summer, a flight paramedic; 35-year-old Monica Chavez, a flight nurse; and 59-year-old Fredrick Green, a patient.
The investigation will be turned over to The Federal Aviation Administration to find out exactly what happened prior to the crash.
