Lobo football kicked off their first game of the season Saturday night. The University of New Mexico has been hard at work trying to get more tickets sold and pack the stadium with students this year.
All 4,000 student tickets were claimed for the game. Event staff say that's unusual--but in a good way.
Fine tuning a student-only tailgate was one way UNM drew in fans that may not have normally come to games.
"It attracts more people to the area and it attracts more people to the game, to the environment- especially from a student aspect, we're working on getting a better team, we provide entertainment to get people to the games," said one student.
Students there told us it starts off game day with even more school spirit.
"It gets you revved up, gets the school spirit going, spirit pumping, puts you in the right mindset," one student said.
UNM also set up more ways for students to buy tickets, gave temporary discounts for Facebook and Twitter fans, and gave out free tickets in the student union building to get new fans excited and amped for the season.
"It's part of Lobo morale so just knowing that other people are here makes everyone else wanna come," said a student.
Students we spoke with say just raising school spirit and showing it off, will make more people show up.
"They need to get here. Next game, game after that, were gonna be in Cruces for two weeks so we need to get people out there," said another student.
