ALBUQUERQUE -- Albuquerque police worked into the night to catch a suspected shooter in the far Northeast Heights.

Officers were dispatched around 9 p.m. to 6800 Oakland Avenue NE in reference to a shooting. Police said the male victim and the suspect, 36-year-old Eric Mechenbier, were involved in an altercation when Mechenbier shot the victim once in the right arm.

The victim is being treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition at this time.

Officers discovered Mechenbier lived nearby and called out a SWAT team, K-9 and air support to assist with locating him.

After negotiating with the suspect for several hours, Mechenbier agreed to peacefully surrender.

Mechenbier is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse.
