ALBUQUERQUE -- An Albuquerque father was stabbed to death on his 24th birthday while trying to get his child back from a man at a gas station, according to police.

Officers were dispatched to the Circle K at Wyoming and Constitution on reports of the stabbing Monday morning. The victim, 24-year-old Kenneth Boyd, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His 24th birthday was Monday, according to his father.

Boyd's girlfriend told police they received a ride after a party from the suspect, 32-year-old Michael Fox. She said Fox drove both of them, their small child and two other people from Edgewood.

When the child started crying, Fox reportedly pulled over so the parents could get a bottle out of the trunk. But Boyd's girlfriend said Fox drove off with the small child when they got out of the vehicle.

Torrance County deputies and Edgewood police responded to their call for help and dropped Boyd and his girlfriend off at a residence in the foothills.

Police said Boyd called Fox and got him to agree to drop the child off at the Circle K.

As Boyd and his girlfriend arrived at the gas station, police said Fox ran across the parking lot and began attacking Boyd. He suffered numerous stab wounds, according to APD.

"I don't understand how that happens with that many people in the car; and the sheriff's office was already involved," the victim's father, Bart Boyd said.

Police said Fox fled from the scene, but detectives were able to locate and take him into custody a short time later.

"Kenneth took to being a dad…so natural," said Boyd's stepmother, Lalena Ybarra. "You know they say a mother's instinct? Kenneth just knew every nuance of that child – every cry, every motion that baby made. Kenny knew exactly what that baby needed."

The motive for the stabbing is unknown at this time.

Fox already has multiple criminal cases pending – one for the unlawful carrying of a firearm from January, and one stemming from an aggravated battery charge, also from January. He pleaded guilty to battery in 2010, and guilty to harassment of a household member in 2009.

Police say the child is safe after the incident.
