Berrendo Middle School officials say an eighth grader will not be returning to the school after he reportedly threatened a victim of the January school shooting.

On Thursday, the Chaves County Sherriff's Department said a new student to Berrendo wrote a message targeting Nathaniel Tavarez on a bathroom wall. The message said he would "finish Nathaniel off" on Sept. 2.

Tavarez was one of the two students injured in a shooting in the school's gym nearly eight months ago.

Roswell Superintendent Tom Burris says the district did not send a note to parents about the incident because he felt the situation was handled well at the school. He said the student will not return to Berrendo.

"We will not tolerate this kind of behavior. It is our mission that students come to school and feel safe and supported," Burris wrote in an email.

The Chaves County Sheriff's Department and the district provided extra personnel to talk to parents and students returning from the holiday break on Tuesday.

The student accused of making the threat is facing disciplinary action.
