ROSWELL -- A threat written on a bathroom wall at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell led to an increase in law enforcement Tuesday.

Police say an 8th grader confessed to writing a message on a bathroom wall last Thursday threatening to "finish off" school shooting victim Nathaniel Tavarez.

Tavarez survived a shooting in the school's gym last January. That threat stated it would happen Tuesday.

But KOB Eyewitness News 4 found out that school was not cancelled, and parents were not notified.

"With the threat being made for today, I don't think that school should have went on," said Autumn Dolan, a parent of a child at the shcool.

Dolan says she had no idea what was going on until she picked her 6th grader up from school Tuesday afternoon.

"She wasn't even sure what had gone on; she just heard the rumor around school," said Dolan.

Superintendent Tom Burris says he didn't notify parents because the situation had been handled.

"We had this situation completely dealt with as of Friday morning," said Burris.

Burris says school was not cancelled because the 8th grader who wrote the threat was arrested.

"There was no need to cancel school today; the student who made the threat was in custody as of Friday," said Burris.

But Dolan says as a parent, she would rather be informed and decide for herself whether to send her child to school.

"We should have still been able to make the determination to send our child to school or not," said Dolan.

"I just wish they would have called or sent a message of some sort…this is what happened, at least, so we can talk to our kids about it," said Stephanie Ward.

The superintendent says the student who wrote the threat will not be allowed back at Berrendo.

Police say the student admitted to writing the threat because he was mad.
