It's been almost a year and a half since the hands free ordinance went into effect in Albuquerque and on average cops are handing out more tickets to drivers.
Cops have dished out more than 500 cell phone citations in one month, but it seems like drivers still aren't getting the message.
Whether drivers are yakking away with their cell phone up to the ear or punching the keypad to send a text, it seems many drivers aren't getting the hint.
"I do text sometimes, so that's probably worse 'cause you're not looking at the road," said one driver.
While at the intersection of San Mateo and Montgomery, Eyewitness News 4 saw over 101 drivers breaking the hands-free law.
Some drivers said they aren't taking the law seriously because cops aren't.
But the Albuquerque Police Department says that's not the case.
Since last April more than 2,500 tickets have been handed out. That's about 170 tickets a month.
Police say the reason they don't give out more cell phone citations is because traffic officers are usually working a number of more serious calls throughout the day.
