Leaders at Expo New Mexico are rolling the dice and taking a $500,000 gamble with the New Mexico State Fair. That's how much revenue they are risking by providing free parking this year.
But leaders hope record attendance will make up for that loss.
"We aren't here to make money, we're here to make our budget and we are here to make sure that families in New Mexico, and folks who come in to the State Fair, get good entertainment," said Expo New Mexico General Manager Judith Espinosa.
Expo New Mexico officials say other state fairs that went to free parking saw attendance go up.
"We ran the numbers because as a state agency and as an enterprise fund we can't be losing money and so we don't want to do that. But we believe by some of the special events that we have, we will be able to bring the numbers in the doors more so than we have done before," said Espinosa.
The fair is banking on those people spending their parking savings inside the gates.
The New Mexico State Fair starts September 5.
