J.P. Murrieta

J.P. Murrieta is the sports director for KOB Eyewitness Sports 4.

J.P.'s reports can be seen weeknights on KOB Eyewitness News 4 at 6 and 10 p.m. He also hosts New Mexico Gameday Friday nights at 10:30, the state's most-watched high school sports show.

Born and raised in Orange County, California, J.P. stayed in-state to attend Pepperdine University in Malibu where he received his bachelor's degree in Telecommunications.

In between classes and soaking up the sun in Malibu, J.P. was the play-by-play announcer for the Pepperdine University men's basketball team while attending college. He also worked as sports director for the university's television station.

In 1993, J.P. joined the news department of KOBF-TV in Farmington as a general news reporter. His interest in sports led him to become instrumental in the development of the station's first sports department. Soon after, he became sports director for the station and moved to Albuquerque in 1996 to work for KOB-TV.  His work includes reporting from the Olympics, British Open, Indy 500, MLB All-Star game and numerous college football bowl games.  During his time in Albuquerque, J.P. has also been the radio voice of the NBDL's Albuquerque Thunderbirds, New Mexico's NBA minor league basketball team.

J.P.'s journalistic contributions to sports have won him recognition in the broadcasting community including awards for best sportscast, best sports stories and even an Emmy nomination.

When he's not providing New Mexicans with the latest sports highlights, J.P. enjoys golfing, skiing/snowboarding, losing to his two sons at video games and spending time with his wife, Tyra.
