The son of a woman who was killed in a duplex fire over the weekend is recalling his heroic effort while still mourning the loss of a loved one.
Joaquin Montoya - burned, bandaged and heartbroken - remembered his last moments with his mother Rita Marquez.
"[I] couldn't lift her up man, couldn't lift her up, told her I'd be right back for her shortly," Montoya said.
Montoya broke a window to go get help, but the flames were just too intense for fire officials to allow him to go back in.
"I got burns on my back, shirt was on fire, and the cops handcuffed me 'cause I was trying to get back in the house," Montoya said.
Fire investigators say the blaze was caused by an electrical wiring problem with the dryer. And Montoya said the duplex didn't have smoke detectors or fire extinguishers.
