County recycles unused ballots

There may not be too many extra ballots this time around with what appears to be record voter turnout at places like UNM

Bernalillo County says they’ll be saving trees and tax payer dollars when they start recycling unused paper ballots this year.

They say early voting is causing an excess of ballots. With 16 locations around the county, every one of them has to be ready to provide every single version of the ballot with all the different local races—more than 400 varieties.

Not only will the county recycle old ballots, they plan on saving money by buying less of them.

The state ordered 1.8 million ballots for the primary, which cost about $1.7 million. For the general election, the order was only a little over 800,000 ballots at a price of $800,000.

"We've ordered substantially less ballots and at the end of the day, we're still going to recycle anything that isn't used,” Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver said. “We're not going to be throwing it in the landfill."

And time is running out for voters to save ballots from the recycle bin. There are just 11 days until Election Day and early voting ends the Saturday before.
