More than a dozen customers at an Albuquerque sandwich shop got one bad surprise after eating lunch there. Instead of paying just a few bucks for sandwiches charged to their credit cards, the New Mexico customers found out they owed several thousands of dollars for stuff bought in New Jersey.
Quiznos customers were feeling a bit anxious after hearing what happened on Sunday.
Police say a woman called the manager saying she was with the bank and was having problems receiving credit card transactions from the restaurant.
"She sounded legitimate. There was no reason for the Quiznos employee to think that there was anything that was suspicious," said Nadine Hamby of the Albuquerque Police Department.
The owner of the Quiznos near Fourth Street and Menaul says his manager gave the caller credit card and transaction information for 15 of its customers who came in that day.
On Monday, the owner called his bank to verify they had called during the weekend, but the bank said they never called.
The owner cancelled the credit cards, but it was too late.
He says about $5,000 was spent on each card in stores throughout New Jersey, totaling about $60,000.
The case has been passed over to the police department's White Collar Crimes Unit.
But no arrests have been made yet.
Police say the customers who were ripped off are covered for fraud by the credit card companies.
The Quiznos owner says he's told his employees and managers not to give out credit card information over the phone without verifying the caller's information.
