Eds: APNewsNow. SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - An unidentified woman driving a stolen sport utility vehicle died after crashing into a truck while fleeing from a state police officer south of Santa Fe.
The officer was watching for speeders when he spotted the stolen SUV Thursday morning. State police spokesman Peter Olson says the officer turned on his lights in an attempt to pull over the SUV, but the driver fled.
The driver slammed into a six-ton truck hauling a crane as she tried to pass a slower car on a curve. It took an hour for crews to get the woman out of the wreckage. She later died at a Santa Fe hospital.
The owner of the SUV had reported the vehicle stolen earlier Thursday. The owner had started the SUV and left the engine running while she got her children ready to leave home, police said.
