UNM Men's basketball coach Steve Alford says he still has about four spots to fill on next year's non conference schedule, but here's a look at who the Lobos will play in 2009-10: Texas Tech, Creighton, Dayton, San Diego, two games with New Mexico State and a possible date with Hawaii. For the record, Alford says he voted against the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Conference Challenge. He thinks the four year series isn't good for the MWC in the long run. Winning on the road in some of those schools is difficult to do.
On the high school level, look out for the Gallup boys basketball team in Class AAAAA. Gallup is 10-3 heading into the weekend and I've heard from more than a couple coaches who tell me the Bengals could be a surprise team come state tourney time. This year's race is wide open. We haven't seen a dominant team take control of the state's largest class.
I can't wait to see tonight's matchup between Clovis and Highland high school. Clovis' Jaye Crockett will be squaring off against Highland's Chad Adams. Both are future Division I talents. Crockett is headed to Texas Tech while Adams will play for the Lobos. Crockett is averaging 29 points and 12 rebounds a game while Adams is putting up 20 and 10 a night. Crockett scored a career-high 50 against Los Alamos earlier this year. This is one of the biggest matchups in Albuquerque of senior big men since Kenny Thomas went up against A.J. Bramlett. Make sure you watch New Mexico Gameday tonight, we'll have the Clovis Wildcats in studio.
