The Albuquerque board of education is expected to consider revising a controversial school lunch program designed to cover a $140,000 debt but which some say is demeaning to students.
Under the program, students who owe their school money for hot lunches bought on credit are denied hot lunches and given, instead, a cold cheese sandwich and either milk or juice.
The program is designed to cover the $140,000 that families owe the district for lunches that have been eaten but never paid for.
Some opponents of the program say that refusing a child a hot lunch and giving them a cold cheese sandwich is humiliating for the child. Other opponents question the nutritional value of the alternative lunch.
Since the policy was put into effect, parents with debts to the school lunch program have repaid $40,000.
