Car break-ins spike at Rail Runner station

The Rail Runner route to Santa Fe has been convenient for commuters, but it has also been convenient for thieves.

Crooks have been targeting cars parked at the Rail Runner's Los Ranchos Station ever since the train began commuting to Santa Fe last month.

The Rail Runner now has a new set of eyes watching over the rows of cars parked at the Los Ranchos/Journal Center Station.

"Since the Rail Runner started continuing service to Santa Fe, we've had four or five break-ins in this particular station and one vehicle theft," said Detective Bill Webb.

BCSO auto theft detectives think thieves are targeting the lot.

"When you have a vehicle here for that period of time, of course, thieves of opportunity are going to take notice of this and use it to their advantage," Webb said.

After deputies notified Rail Runner officials of the break-ins, cameras were installed. And on Wednesday, a full time security officer started patrolling the parking lot.

"We want to make sure people are safe when they're riding the trains," said Rail Runner official Lawrence Rael.

Rail Runner officials are looking at expanding the parking lot to deal with the overflow. After that happens, they plan on putting up a chain link fence to help keep car thieves out.
