The mayor of Albuquerque has to answer some tough questions after he was caught speeding in Tesuque last month.
Mayor Chavez has led a crusade against speeders. He is responsible for putting up speed cameras and “Slow Down Albuquerque” signs that people put in their yards
He was caught going 76 miles-per-hour in a 65 mile-per-hour zone in Tesuque on January 30, according to the citation.
He was in his city-issued SUV on his day off.
A speeding ticket isn't a major crime, but Eyewitness News 4 tracked down Mayor Chavez to ask him if a mayor who's put up speed cameras and handed out signs to remind drivers to slow down should be speeding under any circumstances.
"It's the second speeding ticket in my life and there's no question about it and I paid it," said Chavez.
The mayor’s fine was $55.
Chavez says because he paid the fine, the ticket won't affect his privilege to use a city vehicle.
