It sounds like something out of a Wild West movie, but train robbers are once again making a name for themselves in New Mexico.
There are plenty of trains to target on the line out of Belen to California.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway officials say at least 80 trains use the line everyday. And officials say some of their loads are getting lighter because of bandits.
"[It’s] very odd, like we're going back in history," said Dino Otero, who can see the trains from his convenience store.
Dino Otero sees the trains pass all day at the mini mart on Highway 6, near the Cibola/Valencia County line.
He says one of his customers saw something unusual about six months ago.
"They just said they saw a lot of boxes of TVs sitting off the train, on the ground," Dino said.
Rail officials say the train robbers are swiping high end electronics from rail cars, including flat screen TVs.
It’s still not clear where trains are being ripped off or exactly how the bandits are doing it, but thieves reportedly are following the trains with SUVs and are using GPS equipment to communicate with each other.
BNSF officials say they have disrupted the operation. Authorities located a home in California where a lot of stolen goods turned up, but no bandits were found.
A task force has been set up that includes officials with Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific and other local authorities.
A BNSF spokesperson says he thinks these crimes will be solved rather quickly.
