'Ringleader' pleads not guilty to hazing assault

Michael Gallegos leaves court Thursday

An ex-Robertson football player pegged as the ring leader of a group that allegedly sexually-assaulted teammates was arraigned in Santa Fe Thursday.

Michael Gallegos plead not guilty to several felony charges, including criminal sexual penetration.

Gallegos is accused of sodomizing teammates with a broomstick at a pre-season football camp after someone made a comment about his girlfriend.

Wednesday, four other players accused of helping Gallegos in the attack entered pleas of not guilty. All five players have been put under house arrest.

Gallegos' lawyer, Billy Blackburn, said his client has stayed in close contact with his probation officer, despite contrary allegations.

"People are running around wanting to say 'I saw this person, he wasn't somewhere he wasn't supposed to be," he said.

"It's good to have monitoring that we can say that juvenile probation officer checked on us at 9 o'clock last night and we were home."

The five former players face a combined 61 felony counts. Blackburn said they will most likely stand trial together.

One other player accused in the case, 17-year-old Jerik Padilla, has entered a plea with prosecutors. He admitted to one count of criminal sexual penetration.
