Neighbors want better restrictions at bridge

Residents say because a developer didn't but up barricades, illegal dumping is rampant at this bridge

Residents in a northeast Albuquerque neighborhood say they are tired of seeing all the illegal activity going on under a nearby bridge.

Couches, tires, washers and driers--these are just some of the illegally discarded items that can be found under the bridge at Juan Tabo and the Tijeras Arroyo.

A sign says no vehicles are allowed--but it doesn't seem to be stopping dumpers.

Neighbors say the problem started when the bridge was built a couple of years ago. It was developed in such a way that allows easy access to the arroyo.

There is no fence or barricades near the bridge to stop people from going in. The developer was supposed to put those in, but hasn't.

Neighborhood president Ed Barsis says the bridge has been a big draw for the wrong types.

"We want the arroyo protected and cleared," he said.

Even as our cameras rolled Sunday, a truck entered the arroyo. City Councilor Don Harris was all too familiar with the scene.

"Oh yeah, here we go," he said.

Not only is illegal dumping rampant, we spotted people walking through, driving through--even kids shooting bottle rockets.

But neighbors say one of the things that bothers them the most is the drug taking. They say someone will soon get hurt or killed in the arroyo.

Harris says he wants the arroyo blocked off, and all the loiterers to find a safe place to spend their time. Harris is trying to get the city and the developer to put up some fences and road barricades. He says he has been fighting for the past eight months.
