Farmington officials nix red-light cameras

On a vote that was so close that Farmington Mayor William Standley had to cast the tie breaker, officials of the Four Corners community rejected installing red-light cameras late Tuesday night.

Two city councilors voted to install up to six red-light cameras, which detect speeding and red-light runners and issue citations, by June first. Two councilors were opposed.

The plan was to place three cameras on Main Street and the others along 20th Street. Fines would have started at $115.

There are three municipalities in the state that use or are planning to use red-light cameras to enforce traffic laws: Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Santa Fe.
