Police plan extra patrols
AAA estimates that 37 million people are expected to hit the road this Independence Day weekend and deputies and police across New Mexico are on high alert.

They say to expect beefed up patrols and extra checkpoints to nab speeders and drunk drivers.

Albuquerque Police Spokesman John Walsh said Friday, “This weekend you will be seeing a strong Albuquerque police department throughout the city.”

APD says they will be doing increased patrols citywide and looking for drunk drivers near downtown bars.

“We'll have a DWI checkpoint, as well as increased patrols in or around any establishment that serves alcohol,” Walsh said.

Police will also be set up at Isotopes Park Friday night and Balloon Fiesta Park on the 4th for fireworks shows.

Cops will not just be looking for trouble on roads. They'll also make sure revelers are safe at home.

Walsh told Eyewitness News 4, “We will also be having extra patrols out for the watchful eye, if you will, on any violations of the ordinances surrounding fireworks.” State Police say they will also be adding extra patrols for the holiday and say you can count on seeing their DWI checkpoints throughout the state.
