FARMINGTON (AP) - Farmington's city manager says city employees convicted of drunken driving will be fired.

Rob Mayes says there must be no doubt about the serious consequences of driving while intoxicated.

In an e-mail Wednesday to employees, he said a recent spate of drunken driving arrests among city workers is indefensible and that any worker convicted of DWI - whether off-duty or on the job -would be fired.

Mayes plans to issue a detailed policy soon and will meet with employees next month to discuss it. He says the policy likely will include unpaid leave for employees accused of drunken driving pending the outcome of their court case.

In the last 16 months, five Farmington firefighters, three police officers and a city inspector faced DWI charges.
