Environment Department denies dairy permit again

Environment Secretary Ron Curry issued the decision after the state Water Quality Control Commission remanded the permit issue back to the department.
The decision affects the Parasol Dairy, located about 5 miles southwest of Caballo.
Curry denied the permit because the facility would have been located adjacent to the Percha Creek flood plain that feeds into Rio Grande. He cited concerns about flooding and the potential for migration of E. coli to contaminate ground and surface water.
The dairy had proposed discharging up to 8,000 gallons of dairy wastewater each day.
