AZTEC, N.M. (AP) - Aztec is spending $25,000 on a performance review of its police department in hopes of saving money in the future.

Interim City Manager Ken George says the idea is to make sure citizens are getting what they've paid for and that the department is doing its job.

The northwestern New Mexico community will hire an outside agency to determine if the department is operating as efficiently and productively as possible.

The performance review is expected to take about 10 weeks.  It will examine everything from the department's budget to the number of calls for service.

Aztec Police Chief Mike Heal says the city is trying to see how to save money because times are tough.

The city plans to eventually review all its departments.
