SANTA ROSA, N.M. (AP) - A jury in Santa Rosa has convicted a man of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a 6-year-old who was killed as she slept in a house in the northern New Mexico community of Las Vegas.

State District Judge Abigail Aragon did not immediately set a sentencing date for 22-year-old David Levi Chavez after Friday's verdict.

Jurors deliberated about two hours before convicting Chavez in the 2008 death of Jasmine Garcia.

Outside the courthouse, Jasmine's mother, Ruby Sanchez, said the verdict meant closure.  She says it's better that Chavez is behind bars.

Chavez's attorney, Bob Gorence, declined comment.

The trial was moved from Las Vegas to Santa Rosa because of pretrial publicity.
