Property loss at construction sites is common, but now the city of Albuquerque wants to take their crackdown on property crime one step further by registering construction equipment within the city.

Mayor Richard Berry, who has an extensive background in the construction business, announced the new campaign on Tuesday. The city will team up with the Construction Industry Crime Alliance program (CICA) to issue ID numbers through the police department including decals that will be plastered on equipment.

All members of the CICA organization will take part and most construction companies in the city are partnered with the group. The city predicts the program will save the companies thousands of dollars each year.

Pawn shops across the city will also be provided with the list of ID numbers so they can contact police if they notice something suspicious.

The program costs Albuquerque only a small amount because CICA helped front the cost of the decals.
