Ohkay Owingeh police officer shoots woman in chest

An officer in Rio Arriba County shot a woman in the chest on Sunday, Bureau of Indian Affairs authorities said.

The officer is with the Ohkay Owingeh Police Department, a tribal police agency just north of Espanola.

BIA officials said the officer responded to a domestic dispute around 5 p.m. before he shot the woman.

The woman was air lifted to UNM Hospital, but her condition is unknown.

Investigators shut down NM Highway 68 near the shooting for a couple hours on Sunday.

BIA officials said the officer is on paid administrative leave.
