The NMAA held their Agenda Meeting Wednesday. Many items were discussed. The one topic on the table that stood out for me was a suggestion I've been making for years. I would like to see all the state championship games in football played in one location.
Earlier this year the NMAA sent out questionaires to all football schools asking a variety of questions. Among them, would each school like to see the football title games held at one site? Of the 80 repsonses the NMAA received, 61% voted in favor of this.
Currently, football is the only sport that DOESN'T do it. Soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming, wrestling, tennis, track, baseball, softball, they all play their championships on one day in one location. Whenever I ask why football doesn't, I'm told schools in places like Artesia, Lovington and Las Cruces don't want to give up the chance of a home field advantage and forfeit the chance of their fans getting to see the game in their own backyard.
I understand there will be times when you have Mayfield playing Las Cruces for the title and the game is played in Albuquerque, but we currently do that kind of thing in basketball or baseball. I don't mind if you do it on some sort of rotating basis between Albuquerque and Las Cruces (those two cities being able to provide large venues). No matter where it's played, I think all the schools should play it on one day in one location.
Makes sense to me.
