Man dies in police shootout in Dulce; US 64 still closed

U.S. 64 remained closed Monday morning in the northern New Mexico town of Dulce after a man died in a shootout with state police Sunday.
State police say the suspect who fired shots at them matches the description of a man wanted for shooting at police last week.
Dulce resident Donna Vigil says she was sleeping when a state official pounded on her door early Sunday morning telling her an armed gunman was shooting behind her house and she needed to leave.
"It was scary," said Vigil. "And I was, like, in shock. I mean just fearing for my life."
State and Jicarilla police say the gunman was holed up inside a Giant Express gas station on U.S. 64 in Dulce -- just south of the Colorado border.
They say he started shooting at police when they arrived on scene, hitting four police cars.
State police say the suspect matches the description of Rex Michael Sherwood who is wanted for shooting at Jicarilla police last week. However, positive identification was not released as of Sunday night.
The suspect was found dead around 11:30 a.m.
Witnesses tell KOB 4 you could see windows shot out at the scene.
U.S. 64 remained closed in Dulce Monday morning as police continued to investigate the incident.
