A female golden eagle has been found dead near Dulce.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials say they found the bird in May and determined it died after being shot.
Such birds are protected under the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
People who violate the act can face a $100,000 fine, a jail term, or both.
There is a $2,500 award for anyone who has information leading to an arrest.
Individuals are asked to call the FWS Office of Law Enforcement at (505) 248-7889.
The last golden eagle found killed in New Mexico was an adult male with a satellite tracker, also shot, found west of Las Cruces in late February 2012.
This case also under investigation. Any information about this Las Cruces eagle should also be called in to FWS Office of Law Enforcement.
