A New Mexico community has scrapped its fire department, and that could harm future rescue efforts in Sierra County.

The Truth or Consequences Herald reports Trustees in the Village of Williamsburg chose to dissolve their fire department after accusations that a search for a new fire chief violated the state's open governement or so-called sunshine laws.

So the entire fire department was dissolved.

The department was the only one in the county certified to conduct extracations - such as pulling people out from inside vehicles.

The department could not be reached for comment Thursday evening.
