FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Plans are under way to construct a new fire station and fire department administration building in the city of Farmington.

The Farmington Daily Times reports that the city agreed to hire an architectural firm to draft a plan for the new station that will replace the current facility, which was constructed in the 1950s.

Construction won't begin for another 10 to 12 months.

Fire Chief Terry Page says officials added sections to the current fire station as the city grew, but never accounted for office space and therefore left the department without a central location to conduct its administrative duties.

After construction on the new fire station is complete, the old fire station will be torn down and construction on a new administration will begin.
