LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A gallery of special portraits is planned for New Mexico State University's Pan American Center that will highlight some of New Mexico's foster children.
Gov. Susana Martinez announced the Heart Gallery during a visit to Las Cruces on Wednesday.
The gallery will be opening in November. It will feature portraits of children who are part of the state's foster network and are in need of what state officials call "forever families."
Martinez is asking New Mexicans to consider adopting or becoming foster parents. She says the greatest gift a child can be given is a caring, stable and loving home.
The state Children, Youth and Families Department says in Dona Ana County alone, there are 149 children in foster care. Forty-nine of them are up for adoption, and half don't have a prospective adoptive home yet.
