AZTEC, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Susana Martinez has appointed an assistant district attorney to fill a vacant judgeship in northwestern New Mexico.

The governor's office announced Daylene Marsh's appointment on Friday.

Marsh was the only candidate recommended by an independent nominating commission for the interim appointment.

Martinez had wanted at least two candidates to consider but the commission stuck with Marsh.

The vacancy arose with the resignation of District Judge Thomas Hynes.

The general election winner will assume the judgeship later this year. Marsh is the GOP nominee and Democrats have selected Farmington lawyer Emet Rudolfo.

Marsh is a sergeant in the New Mexico Army National Guard.

She served two tours in Iraq.
