This is not the same old Lobo football team

Ultimately it's a loss for the Lobos in the standings, but you wouldn't know it by the amount of applause following the game at University Stadium. The crowd on hand, starving for a team that has some fight in 'em, gave this year's squad a well deserved standing ovation.
UNM was down 25-0 at halftime, but the Lobos outscored Boise State 29-7 in the final two quarters. This was a top-25 team the Lobos had on the ropes. Just the possibility of a headline grabbing upset put some energy into a crowd that hasn't had much to cheer about in the last three years. The Lobos lost 32-29, but it felt like a win to the fans.
It's easy to see what was the deciding factor in this game, turnovers. The Lobos gave up three of four fumbles. Three first half fumbles led to 18 Boise State points in the first half.
"It comes back to turnovers for us," said head coach Bob Davie. "We came in here 24th in the country in turnover margin. Where we are defensively right now, we can't afford to cough it up on offense. We have to force turnovers on defense."
Following the game, Davie wasn't into discussing moral victories. A 32-29 loss is still a loss. The coach was frustrated about coming up short.
"For us to win (particularly against a team like this, but really any team to be honest) we have to play flawless," said Davie. "We have to play flawless. And we're not really capable of that just yet. We're getting better."
"I think we showed people that we're not going to give up," said Lobo linebacker Joe Stoner. "This isn't the team from the past. This is a whole different era."
Lobo fans, get on board now. This train is headed in the right direction.
