ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A former New Mexico corrections officer has pleaded guilty to a criminal civil rights charge.

Federal authorities say 40-year-old Demetrio Juan Gonzales was accused of striking and choking a DUI suspect at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque last Dec. 21.

Prosecutors say Gonzales pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of violating the civil rights of an individual. He's facing up to 10 years in federal prison when he's sentenced at a later date.

Authorities say Gonzales was assigned to a unit at MDC where individuals are brought to be booked soon after they're arrested. His job was to photograph and fingerprint the suspects.

Gonzales was accused of assaulting a man who was verbally uncooperative during the booking process. Two other ex-corrections officers face trials in the case.
