Edward Salas was arrested Thursday in Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, Mexico by the Policia Federal Ministerial in coordination with the U.S. Marshals Service.
Salas was added to the agency's 15 Most Wanted fugitive list in December 2011.
Salas escaped from the Curry County Detention Center in Clovis in August 2008, and had been on the run ever since.
According to the agency, at the time of his escape, Salas was serving a life sentence plus 56 years for his role in the murder of 10-year-old Carlos Perez.
In Sept. 2005, Salas, along with his brothers and two other individuals, planned to murder Ruben Perez, but instead killed his brother, Carlos, who was sleeping in the same bedroom, the agency states.
The U.S. is seeking Salas's extradition to New Mexico. The U.S. Marshals Service worked closely with the Department of Justice Office of International Affairs and the Curry County District Attorneys Office in this case, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Noe Torres, who is also charged in the same 2005 murder of Perez, was arrested outside of a religious compound in Mexico earlier this year in Mexico and was extradited back to the U.S. in July. Torres fled Clovis in 2005 prior to prosecution.
