"Sadness, absolute sadness that this went on in our neighborhood," said Dave Gottheimer.

Gottheimer still remembers the screams along Malaguena Lane NE in the early morning hours of July First.

"Kids who were out on the street who were crying and just hysterical over the tragic event," he said. Amy Herrera and her husband, Marc, were hosting a party for a foreign exchange student who was living with them.

The party ended just after 4:00 a.m. with Marc Herrera dead. Albuquerque Police Department officers found the 37-year-old, Air Force major’s body in the master bedroom closet slumped over on his knees.

Court records state Amy told police she and her husband had been drinking during the party. And when it ended she said Marc got angry the students weren’t sleeping in separate rooms. Amy told police Marc then grabbed his loaded gun and pointed it at the students.

He then followed her to their room, pushed her in the closet and started arguing yelling he wanted to die. Amy told police he made her hold the gun to his mouth and forced her to pull the trigger.

Three months later investigators say her story just doesn’t add up.

Amy Herrera is now charged in her husband’s murder.

"I'm shocked. Absolutely shocked," said Gottheimer. "I think if anything maybe someone snapped."

Gottheimer says he never noticed problems and only spoke with Marc about motorcycles.

"But no clue whatsoever that anything was ever, not just wonderful," he said.

Aside from her story not lining up with Marc Herrera’s injures, police said an acquaintance of Amy’s came forward saying Amy recently confessed to killing her husband.

The case is being turned over the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
