KOB Eyewitness News 4 has a long-standing committment to covering politics in New Mexico.

That is why, as part of our Decision 2012 Election Coverage, we are giving each candidate in some of the big federal races two minutes of free airtime to explain who they are, and why you should vote for them.

Each weekday through the end of October, KOB will feature a new candidate at the 6:30 p.m. newscast.

We begin Monday night with Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Martin Heinrich.

"Hi, my name is Martin Heinrich and I'm running for the United States Senate.

Growing up, my dad was an electrician. My mom worked in a factory. They worked and they stretched every dime, but still there were some tough times along the way; so, I know what it's like to struggle in a tough economy.

I'm running for the Senate because I want our children, yours and mine, to grow up in a kind of country we all believed in growing up--an America where you prosper if you work hard and you play by the rules.

Now, I want you to know my priorities are New Mexico's priorities: protecting social security and Medicare; tax cuts for the middle class; protecting and preserving the promises we've made to our veterans; and, standing up for more affordable college for everyone.

Now, I come home nearly every weekend so that I can meet with New Mexicans, hold jobs fairs, raise my two sons.

I've always fought for things that matter most to New Mexicans. I'll continue to do that in the U.S. Senate and I would be honored to have your vote.

If you'd like to learn more about our campaign go to www.martinheinrich.com. And please, whatever you do, don't forget to vote."
