Roswell groups holding salvation army food drive

The Roswell Chamber of Commerce, Roswell Daily Record and Salvation Army Food Bank are working together on a food drive from October 15 to November 30. They are asking Chaves County residents to donate non-perishable food items, like pasta and canned goods, by bringing them to either the Salvation Army Food Bank at Southeast Main and Chism, the Chamber of Commerce at Richardson and 2nd Street, the Roswell Daily Record building off Main Street, Farmer’s Country Market or Lawrence Brother’s IGA.
“A lot of us get to the point where we think, we’re okay, everybody’s ok, everybody’s going to have a merry Christmas and a happy Thanksgiving, and we lose the fact that there are people so less fortunate and that they really are having trouble making ends meet,” said Chamber of Commerce executive director, Dorrie Faubus-McCarty. “I think it’s time for us to open our eyes and hearts over the holidays and say, let’s help some people out here.”
The Chamber of Commerce and Roswell Daily Record decided to work with the Salvation Army on a food drive after visiting the food bank and seeing how many shelves were empty – many more than in the past.
“They’re about empty, I hate to say that,” said Salvation Army Captain Beau Perez. “We have shelf after shelf and there’s not much left there... that’s why we're doing this fall emergency call out – we’ve never had to do this before in the years that I’ve been here, this is an unusual thing for us.”
Part of the problem is increased clientele due to rising food costs and job losses, meaning that more people are in need of the food, which is accessible to low-income families and people with disabilities.
Captain Perez said food donated will stay within Chaves County. “It’ll probably go right out the door on Chism Street."
