Bernalillo County is bracing for strong, dry winds Wednesday afternoon.

The county has issued a Red Flag warning effective until 6 p.m. Wednesday, based on a forecast from the National Weather Service that's calling for extremely dry, windy conditions.

Red Flag conditions mean weather conditions are ripe for a catastrophic fire.

The forecast says critical conditions are likely to develop in Bernalillo County over the East Mountains and into the Rio Grande Valley along either side of I-40.

Dry winds will be starting at 15 to 25 mph and increasing to 25 to 35 mph later - with gusts of up to 50 mph possible.

The county is advising residents to take these precautions:

* No open burning

* Use caution with any open flame or spark-producing equipment

* Dispose of smoking materials in appropriate containers

If you ever have questions, check the Bernalillo County Fire Department Burn Advisory Hotline at 468-7200 before performing any outside burning.
