New Mexico State Police say a San Rafael man died early Thursday in a single-vehicle, single person crash on I-40 east of Grants.

Police say Johnny Valdez, 28, was driving a gray 2004 Chevy SUV several feet south of the eastbound shoulder of I-40.

The vehicle overturned several times before coming to rest. Valdez was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Officers say evidence suggests he fell asleep at the wheel.

Valdez was apparently not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
