Las Cruces man, 77, dies while crossing NM 70

A 77-year-old Las Cruces man was killed early this morning after being struck by a sport utility vehicle as he attempted to cross Highway 70.
New Mexico State Police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald confirms that Daniel Barnes died at the scene near Porter Road.
Police identified the driver of the 1994 Toyota 4Runner as 50-year-old Jane McAllister, also of Las Cruces.
Lt. McDonald said the investigation is ongoing and it's not yet certain if any charges will be filed in connection with the death.
The westbound lanes of Highway 70 were closed for at least three hours as officials investigated the scene.
